The MAV is located a few steps away from archaeological excavations of ancient Herculaneum. It is a center of culture and technology applied to cultural heritage and communication among the most advanced in Italy.
Inside is a unique and extraordinary museum: a virtual and interactive tour where the excitement of an amazing journey back through time just before the Plinian eruption in 79 AD that destroyed the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum.
More than seventy multimedia installations returned life and splendor to the main archaeological sites of Pompeii, Herculaneum, Baia, Stabiae and Capri.
Through reconstructions, visual interfaces and holograms, the visitor, conducted into a virtual world can experiment through play and interaction new media opportunities that technology offers for the enjoyment of the archaeological patrimony.
The eruption of the Vesuvius: the Mav’s most spectacular installation. Using the concept of a virtual theater, a circular structure surrounds the spectator placing him at the center of the room where a stereoscopic 3D reconstruction
of the eruption is shown as narrated by
Plinius the Younger.
Completely surrounded by sensory effects, tremors, and flashing lights, it is the first exhibition of its kind realized in Italy, based on an innovative system that enables a multi-projection visualization
in 3D/MultiD stereoscopic.
Unlike to what happens in a 3D cinema, here the scene is not limited to the front screen, but is spread all around on a huge 26 meters long silver fiber tape.
The effect obtained is that of being fully immersed in a multisensory virtual space through an image definition five times greater than that of a FullHD screen and three-dimensional sound.
